NAWIC NSW | LUNCH WITH A LEADER SERIES:
JESSICA RIPPON – CONSTRUCTION LEGAL

Jessica Rippon is the Principal Solicitor at Construction Legal with over 20 years experience in building and construction law.

Jessica launched Construction Legal in 2018 with a bold new idea: fold her husband Shawn Rippon’s thirty years of engineering experience as a Major Projects Specialist into the business in order to give it a remarkable point-of-difference. It proved a savvy business move. By integrating legal expertise with in-house engineering knowledge, Construction Legal is uniquely equipped to navigate the complexities of construction law. It can scrutinise every aspect of both legal contracts and technical construction scopes with unparalleled precision – the literal ‘nuts and bolts’. This dual capability allows the team to identify potential discrepancies, ambiguities and risks that other law firms often overlook. As a result, clients are either shielded from costly litigations that arise from vague or poorly drafted contractual terms, or alternatively, are better positioned to pursue legal proceedings of their own.

With Jessica at the helm, Construction Legal has gained immense reputational gains within the industry. After her visionary Masters thesis ‘The Solution to the Strata Living Crisis’ went viral, it earned the firm widespread recognition and acclaim. This ground-breaking research showcased Jessica’s ability to identify critical issues within the industry and provide practical solutions. The attention garnered not only solidified her position as a thought leader but also catapulted Construction Legal to the forefront of the construction law landscape.

The impact of Jessica’s research extended far beyond academic accolades, however. Recognising her expertise, the Office of the Building Commissioner engaged her as a key ministerial advisor to draft the very same proposed Decennial Liability Insurance policy her thesis proposed, and her insights eventually became the blueprint for the first-ever iCIRT (Independent Construction Industry Rating Tool). The successful implementation of the iCIRT system has significantly improved consumer protection and industry practices, further enhancing Construction Legal’s standing among key stakeholders.

Jessica’s role as a trailblazing businesswoman in a male-dominated industry has attracted attention and admiration, inspiring other women to pursue leadership roles. Her mentorship programs and advocacy efforts have fostered a diverse, inclusive culture at Construction Legal, empowering employees and attracting top talent to the firm.

Jessica is a strategic thinker and strives to develop solutions to legal problems that provide commercial value for her clients.
