School Engagement

With an eye on the future, this element of our remit is about cultivating opportunities for the future women of the construction industry. We work closely with leading educational institutions across QLD to educate students on the pathways and opportunities available to them – in both white and blue collar roles. This manifests in the form of the following events:

In-School Experience Program

A key part of NAWIC QLD’s offering in this space has been rolling out an In-School Experience program which targets female high school students, with a particular focus on the regions. This program aims to demystify the professions in the construction industry through a panel discussion. We believe one of the most effective ways of communication is through direct engagement and in-person communication between female students and industry professionals. Through this program we hope to capture female students’ interests on STEM when selecting VET and/or senior subjects, prior to tertiary course selection.

At the In-School Experience, we are proposing to:

  • Target audience are female students;

  • 30-40mins interactive panel discussion ‘A Day in My Life’ with industry professions in-person or with the combination of in-person and web conferencing. Topics to cover include:

    • Their university degree/career choice and subjects they did at high school;

    • A day in their study/work life;

    • What they see in the future for their career in construction industry;

    • What the employer looks for when hiring.

  • Potential for a site visit.

Panel discussion will be facilitated by a committee representative, and the panels in question are comprised of senior industry leaders, a recent construction/engineering female graduate, and a current construction management/engineering student.
