NAWIC NSW | SANDSTONES DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION BUILDING TOUR

Built and NAWIC NSW invites you to join us for a special preview site tour of the soon to be completed adaptive reuse of the former Department of Education building as the first stage of The Sandstones Precinct redevelopment to create Sydney’s first 6-star luxury hotel.

After being inaccessible to the public for over a century, works on the Department of Education includes a new reception, 192 guest rooms, internal pool, spa and gym facilities and restoration of the heritage façade and interiors of this state significant building.

The Department of Education comprises of two heritage buildings, the first constructed in 1915 to house the Department of Education, and the second in 1930 as accommodation for the Department of Agriculture. The building today is heritage listed and contains 14 features graded of exceptional significance including the external sandstone façade, marble entrance steps, original steel windows, Level 7 Gallery (refurbished to house the hotel’s wellness centre) and roof top sky lanterns (skylights).

As part of the tour you’ll hear about the range of complex construction work required to bring this building to life including heritage retention, refurbishment and restoration and major structural work to adapt and extend the building.

The tour will be followed by networking drinks.

Note: All visitors are required to bring or wear their own PPE, this includes hard hats, hi-vis vest and enclosed flat shoes. On-site photography is not allowed.
